In this project, FijiLIFE Foundation will work with Model Towns Charitable Trust towards a grant of $15,000 to provide welfare and shelter funds and better support the education system at Koroipita so kids don’t fall through the net and fall behind.

Objective
The project seeks to provide welfare and shelter funds and better support the education system at Koroipita Model Towns in Fiji.

Approach
Main partners in the project are the Model Towns Charitable Fund, a registered charity in Fiji, and FijiLIFE Foundation Limited, a registered DGR charity in Australia.

The goal of the project is to strengthen the Model Towns prescription that offers important solutions for managing rural/urban drift and for the resettlement of climate change and other refugees. Cost effective safe housing and family advancement in a clean and green environment.

Plans have been presented to increase the housing stock to 386 homes. The population would then increase from the present 1,100 to 1740 residents.

At present there are 1550 families (nearly 7000 people) applying for a home at Koroipita, and there are no vacant houses!

The MTCT Family Advancement Plan (FAP) provides detailed guidance and support to ensure compliance with the community rules and to help the families achieve civic skills and financial independence. The ultimate goal of the plan is to progress each family to home ownership in mainstream communities – that is to move outwards, but upwards as their property gains value.

The Community Development Programme helps strengthen the self-governance structure through the Koroipita Community Council which comprises 18 elected Block Leaders and others such as youth representatives appointed by the Trustees. The residents sign an Occupation License which obliges them to abide by the rules.

Health Clinic – A Koroipita resident Litia was appointed to attend a village health work course with the Ministry of Health. She acquired her certification and was immediately appointed as the village nurse. She works part-time to assist with medical cases.

Youth Development – Koroipita’s Youth Development Programme helps build life skills and provides support and care for the young people through training, counselling, meetings, and support groups. Youths participate in various volunteer activities around the community, including helping build houses. Careers support helps them get placements in tertiary schools and we also provide opportunities for attachment with the project.

Let’s work to help families achieve self–sufficiency by supporting education for adults and children and giving now for income generating projects and job search with the ultimate aim of helping families to progress to home ownership in mainstream communities.

— Cost effective safe housing and family advancement in a clean and green environment

— Build and maintain 386 affordable, cyclone resistant homes and community facilities for 1,740 residents

— Test and apply effective, durable and affordable solutions for all their basic needs – such as water supply, sewerage treatment, waste management, energy and soil conservation measures.
